Hi there! Emma here, one of Dr. Green’s assistants, dropping in to share a little something with you.
The days here working at Dr. Green’s office are always high-energy and dynamic. Whether our patients are in for their hygiene visits, or in to see Dr. Green for restorative appointments, everyone needs a little something different. If us assistants aren’t seeing patients, we’re helping to change the hygiene room over, popping out front to help Karen confirm appointments and coordinating with the dental labs we work with, or getting caught up on stocking the rooms, and sanitizing and sterilizing.. everything!! Though I enjoy working in a high-paced environment, our lunch hours here at the office are a respite for us during busy days. In the summer, we are blessed to have a little patio to take our lunch, and catch up with one another. It’s so nice to have a space of our own to enjoy each other’s company, when there’s a break in the action.
Recently Dr. Green was out of the office one afternoon and I took that opportunity to give our beloved patio a bit of a makeover. Though I vibe with the day-to-day at work here, it’s nice sometimes to do something a little different and creative. Over the past couple of years, the paint had chipped on the patio furniture, the umbrella had become a bit faded, and the raised beds needed to be revitalized with new seedlings. With Dr. Green away, I had the whole afternoon to work my magic. Read on to witness the transformation!

First off, I took a trip to Royal River Natural Foods in Freeport to browse their rack of organic seedlings. In the tall bed, I planted a few different cherry tomatoes, a jalapeno pepper, a red Italian pepper, and for our lunches, some thyme and Thai basil. It’s so exciting to see everything sprouting up already and blooming! I’m hoping the cherry tomatoes will grab on to the trellis soon!
There were two raised bed boxes on the ground next to the building, both sitting on the patio. Dr. Green had purchased blueberry and raspberry seedlings last month, and in order for these bushes to over-winter, we needed to move one of the beds off of the patio and break up the earth underneath, so that’s what we did! We’re already getting a few raspberry blossoms, and crossing our fingers that it grows tall enough for our patients to see it out the operating room window. There are assorted cosmos too to enjoy while we wait for the blueberry bush to thrive. In the other bed, I chose to plant blue lobelias, burnt orange petunias and a cabbage. I just love how the colors complement each other!
Lastly, I had to take a metal brush to the patio furniture to scrape away the chipping paint. After wiping off the paint chips and pollen, I doused the table, chairs and umbrella stand with a rich, glossy black paint. This made our lunch area look really elegant. The umbrella was added to match the flowers we picked out.
We’re all looking forward to spending our lunch hours out here and watching the flowers and veggies grow! If you’re coming in for hygiene here at the office, or to see Dr. Green, ask to go out and take a peek at our patio!
Spring is a time for new beginnings, a time to plant seeds and watch how they grow. Through this very strange time we’ve all gone through, and it has been our focus to hold space for our patients and for each other since the pandemic began. We are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, and are relieved to see our patients doing so well and staying on top of their dental health, and overall health. Flowers not only need sunshine, but they need the rain to grow. I think we humans are the same.
Cheers,
Emma
